The Engineering Process at TWI

The engineering process is a set of steps that engineers must follow to find a solution to any issue. This includes the identification of an objective as well as determining constraints and then creating, designing, and testing. This is an essential part of every project at TWI. It allows us to ensure that our projects meet the highest standards of safety and performance. This is especially important for New York City project as they must be in compliance with strict requirements.

In this phase students look into the issue they’re confronted with in order to determine what the issue is and collect data. It’s an open, student-centered method that shifts the focus of the classroom away from traditional science instruction.

Students brainstorm ideas for solving the issue. This is done through discussions and writing on a whiteboard or by using software. Some ideas might not work, but that’s fine because it gives them the chance to try different ideas and come up with the most effective solution.

After analyzing the results of their research and brainstorming, the group chooses a solution to design and construct. It could be done on paper, using CAD software, or even through the creation of a prototype, which could be physical or virtual. This is a great step for students because they can create something tangible that will allow them test their ideas.

Engineers have to be cautious because they are subject to constraints like time costs, tools, and resources. Engineers must also be aware that their solutions must be safe and efficient so they can be used in the real world.
